Royalty, heroines and hiking in June
At the start of every month, we offer you a short list of pleasant activities, some focussed on afternoon tea. Herewith five suggestions for the month of June 2013.
One way to enjoy the good weather and the outdoors is to don hiking boots and explore new territory. A new hiking trail – the Laura Secord Legacy Trail – opens in Ontario (Canada) on Saturday, June 22 – 200 years to the day after Ms. Secord’s heroic hike to warn the British garrison – 32 kilometres (20 miles) and 18 hours away – of an impending American invasion against Canada.
The hike begins at Laura Secord’s Queenston log cabin (restored as an interpretive centre) and finishes at DeCew House in Thorold where she delivered her message to the British forces.
June is also a royal month with the anniversary on June 23 of Queen Victoria’s coronation. It was 175 years ago that England’s longest reigning monarch ascended the throne. This does indeed call for an afternoon tea in the garden!
And we shouldn’t forget that June 16 is Father’s Day.
Summer and festivals seem to go hand in hand. Here are a few you can visit in real time or virtually: Luminato, Toronto June 14-23; Montreal Folk Fest on the Canal, Montreal June 12 -16; Glastonbury Festivals June 26- 30, Worthy Farm, Pilton.
And finally, closing on a regal note, the royal birth is due next month; we are developing an afternoon tea menu to celebrate. Follow our blog postings and our website for details.
